SAFE 8.1 Tip: Improvements
Make Translog Easier
has always been one of our most important SAFExtensions. It lets you see exactly
who did what and when by auditing all changes to your database. But there
have been a couple of features in Translog that were slightly less than user
friendly. And those made Translog less used than it should be.
The first issue was turning it on! When Translog monitors a given process (say, changes to editing a Sales Order) it writes data to it's audit trail to indicate what changed. But that increased the amount of database activity. So the developers created a system in Security, whereby you control which events are monitored and for which users. Unfortunately, many of you didn't realise that you needed to activate these features and that you needed to turn them on for each user you wished to monitor!
We addressed this in a couple of ways:
1. By default now, all Translog events are monitored for all users. In other words, everything is 'on' for everyone. You can selectively turn these 'off' as needed, although the only real reason to disable any monitoring would be if you found that performance was declining.
2. It used to be possible for the Default Employee to turn off Translog features without this fact being monitored. That's been fixed. If someone changes the settings for Translog, they are monitored just like any other action in SAFE.
3. And last, but most importantly, we made it easier to find specific entries. In the past, if you wanted to find out who or what changes had been made to a given sales order, you had to open the Translog Browse and create a Query for that sales order. This worked, but was less than convenient---especially if you were interested in changes to several sales orders. Now, there is a right click Translog option on all browse boxes. Click the Translog option and a secondary browse box appears instantly showing you all changes to that particular transaction! As we said, this works for all browse boxes, including sales orders, vendor bills, product masters, RFQs, vendor POs, G/L entries, forms management and so on...
With these subtle changes, we hope you will make greater use of Translog. How many times during the week do you wonder who did that? Well, now Translog can give you that answer a lot faster, and with much easier setup.

Ciaran's
Corner: MLK Day!
Like many of
you, we celebrate Dr. King's birthday. As we've said before, King has special
importance for the Irish. His career was the catalyst for the civil
rights movement in Ireland. His tactics of non-violence and his belief that
change can occur, even in the most entrenched systems caused thousands
and thousands of Irish to begin protesting for equal rights in Northern Ireland.
Sadly, most Americans only see the nasty aftermath of these protests. None of the peaceful marches and events were covered by American TV. All the violence was---and almost always without explaining why. But that violence, terrible as it was, eventually collapsed as people recognised that King's way was the only way to a permanent solution.
Today, Ireland isn't quite there (what country is?), but Catholics in Northern Ireland now have far greater civil rights and are becoming an increasing part of the government. And with the improvements in the Republic's economy, the future looks quite bright. I would suggest that, without the influence of Dr. King; constantly reminding people to communicate respectfully, but relentlessly, such prosperity could not have occurred.
Here in America, and especially in the troubled parts of the world where we fight, King's message is needed more than ever. Despite all the tough talk and all our power, there is still no end in sight for death and suffering. It is our belief that, ultimately, King's methods will win the day and create lasting peace---if such a thing is indeed possible.
Therefore, we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King's life and pray that his principles are recognized to be just as powerful, relevant and needed today as they were forty years ago.
