When I was about nine, I went into a bar with
my father (yes, children frequent pubs in Ireland, though not for 'a drop') and I recall
him asking the bar man, 'So, where's Frankie, today?'. The bar man just looked at him and
said, 'Frankie's gone.' That's it. My father knew. Well, I didn't know. What they
were talking about, of course, was another senseless killing in 'The Troubles'. What I
thought about was how odd it was that someone who was there yesterday, simply
wasn't there any longer. How can that be? It was as inexplicable to me as if
aliens had instantly appeared with a giant Hoover and sucked up one of my friends. How can
someone just not be there any longer? This feeling of confusion has stayed with
me for many years and is still the dominant emotion that comes to mind over any act of
terrorism. Senseless is a very good word for it. It literally makes no sense. It's just
hard for one to get one's mind 'round it.
As odd as it may sound, this week would be a good time to reflect upon our good fortune being here. America has, with this one great exception, been spared a tremendous amount of the rest of the world's unhappiness. If you cannot understand what motivates people to fly planes into buildings it is simply because we live in a country that provides so many opportunities; and so few frustrations. It is almost impossible for Americans to get as worked up about anything as these people because we are so fortunate. So when people say, 'God Bless America', no worries. This is most certainly the case and more so than just about any place on earth.
Faxback Specials
Too!
Our friends at Faxback would also like us to
pass on the fact that they too are offering amazing savings of up to 50% on all
their NetSatisfaxtion and WinFax products. These are our favorite network faxing products
which make faxing from SAFE so drop-dead simple it's ridiculous. Options also
allow for easy broadcast faxing, plus their latest innovation Fax To PDF
Conversion. This new module instantly and automatically converts all your received
faxes into Adobe Acrobat PDF® files. Imagine: no more filing incoming faxes! If you get
as many faxes as we do, and need to file away every one, you know how much of a pain this
is. FaxBack's PDF Convert Module solves this problem and makes
certain you'll never lose an incoming fax again! Call to order.
Ciaran's Corner: Simpler Reporting
Time and time again, we hear about Query this
and Query that. You like the flexibility of Queries but hate having to think them up or,
what's even worse, having to remember where you ran that report from. Here is a quick tip
to make life easier.
1. Go into UTILITIES and select Report Batch Printer.
2. A browse of Saved Reports will appear. Nothing there? Probably because you don't have the Enable Saved Reports box checked. Please do so.
Now, whenever you print a report, everything about that report is saved in this Browse, including all your Query selections and so on. Try it now, please. Close out this window and go print a report in the usual way from most anywhere in SAFE. That's OK, I'll wait.
Ed. Note: These sorts of cutesy literary devices are quite silly, really.
OK, you're back. Great. Now, please go back to UTILITIES and select Report Batch Printer. This time you should see the report you just generated here, with the Description of the Query. Please select it. Now press the [Print] button, then press the [Print] button one more time to get past the Current/Tagged Dialog. Presto! You now have the exact same report you printed before.
So what is the fuss? Well, first of all, you did not have to remember where to go to locate the report. And secondly, you did not even have to look at those confounded Queries! And finally, let's not overlook the Batch capability. If you have several reports that you routinely print together, this can save a lot of time by letting you tag several Saved Reports click [Print] once and go out for coffee. (When you go, please don't come back with that cheap stuff burning in the break room.)
No Free Lunch!
Like most things, this is not a panacea. Some drawbacks
1. Somebody has to create the report in the first place, so this is really
2. Not every report works with the Report Batch Printer. A couple come to mind: The Sales History Audit Trail Browse, The Product History Audit Trail. But these are just about the only exceptions and were never designed for extensive reporting capabilities anyway.
3. Saved Reports only work for reports which have relatively unchanging Query Options. For example, if you have a report which uses a date range and that date range changes weekly, this is not a good candidate for a Saved Report.
Til Next Time!
